- What to provide
- PGM files (.pgm). Keep the source if you will need to edit it again.
- What you get
- HDR still images (.hdr), individually or in a ZIP. Converting an SDR source does not create extra HDR detail.
Example input for PGM to HDR Converter
Illustrative input, not a record of a completed test. Check the selected mode before running it.
Input: photo.pgm → output: photo.hdr (illustrative filename). How to convert PGM to HDR
HDR is selected on this page. Files are processed locally; the page downloads its conversion engine on first use.
- Choose a PGM file (.pgm) or drag it into the workspace. Add up to 30 images, no larger than 20 MB each.
- Leave Convert to set to HDR. The quality slider is disabled for this output. Set Transparency background for any transparent pixels.
- Select Convert images. Open a preview and check the output dimensions.
- Download the .hdr file or use Download all (.zip) for a batch. Open the result in the application you intend to use.
Why won't my PGM file convert?
Check that the file is an actual PGM image rather than a renamed file. Try one smaller image first; the input limit is 40 million pixels and 16,384 pixels per side. Allow the processing engine to load before retrying.
Before converting your PGM file
The PGM source is grayscale. Converting it to a color-capable container will not restore colors absent from the source.
What changes in the HDR output?
An SDR image remains limited by its source data. Conversion does not create new highlight detail, an exposure bracket or a calibrated lighting map; output is opaque.
Supported features and limits
Converting an SDR source does not create extra HDR detail.
Before you use the result
- Inspect transparent areas: this output is opaque, so choose a suitable background before converting.
- Compare output dimensions and file size. Changing format does not guarantee a smaller file.
- Animated or multi-page sources produce one still image here. Renaming the extension does not perform a conversion.
If PGM to HDR Converter does not work as expected
If your PGM file fails, confirm it opens in its original application and is not just a renamed file. Try one smaller image to distinguish a format problem from browser memory limits.
Where your input is processed
The tool processes input in your browser. Loading the page and its processing libraries still needs network access. Site analytics and sharing services are separate from file processing; see the privacy explanation below. Privacy details.

A few things to know.
Which image formats can I convert?
Choose from 23 input formats and 21 output formats. HEIC and HEIF are input-only. Animated and multi-page files become a single still image. SVG input must be self-contained; convert text to paths to preserve lettering. SVG output embeds a PNG bitmap; it does not create editable vector paths. PSD output is flattened.
Will my images lose quality?
PNG uses lossless encoding. JPEG, WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL and JPEG 2000 offer quality controls. GIF reduces colors, PGM is grayscale and PBM is black and white. ICO images are scaled to fit 256 × 256. File sizes may grow or shrink. Metadata, including camera and location information, is not copied.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. Your browser handles every conversion locally. Files are not sent to a server or saved after you leave this page. For browser stability, each image is limited to 20 MB and 40 million pixels.
