How to escape or unescape a JSON string

Escape raw text into a JSON string or decode it.

  1. Paste your data into the input editor or select Open file, using the input format requested by this tool.
  2. Set “Mode” for your task. Check the values before running the tool.
  3. Select Run tool and inspect the output or any validation errors.
  4. Copy or download the result when it is ready. Review generated code or converted data before using it in another application.

How to unescape JSON

Choose Unescape JSON string, then paste a quoted JSON string and run the tool. Escaped quotes, backslashes and newline sequences become readable characters. Choose Escape text for the reverse operation. Unescaping is different from formatting an entire JSON object.

Before you use the result

  • Choose Escape for raw text or Unescape for an already quoted JSON string.
  • A visible backslash-n sequence and an actual newline are different inputs. Check whether the receiving application expects JSON text or a parsed string.

If JSON Escape & Unescape does not work as expected

Read the reported error location. Check quotes, delimiters and the selected mode; a file in another format needs the matching converter first. Repairs can change meaning, so review the differences.

Where your input is processed

The tool processes input in your browser. Loading the page and its processing libraries still needs network access. Site analytics and sharing services are separate from file processing; see the privacy explanation below. Privacy details.
